DR. PETER DAVID SLY, PBC CHAIR Queensland Children's Medical Research Institute, University of Queensland, Australia Professor Sly completed his medical training and MD at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He was then awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Canadian MRC and spent two years working in Respiratory Physiology at the Meakins-Christie Laboratories, McGill University, Montreal. Upon his return to the Department of Thoracic Medicine, Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, he established a model for partitioning lung mechanics into airway and parenchymal compartments in puppies. This has lead to the development of new non-invasive techniques for measuring the mechanical properties of airways and lung parenchyma in small laboratory animals (rats and mice) and in human infants. In 1991 Professor Sly moved to the Telethon Institute of Child Health Research in Western Australia to set up the Division of Clinical Sciences. Professor Sly’s current appointments are:
Professor Sly’s research interests include mechanisms for the development of asthma, measurement of lung function in infants and small children, small animal models of asthma and other respiratory diseases, cystic fibrosis and vaccine preventable diseases. Professor Sly was awarded a DSc in Clinical Respiratory Physiology and Immunology from the University of Western Australia in 2002. He is a member of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Dr. Sly was appointed to the PBC Board in June 2004 and elected as Chair of the Board in February 2008.
