DR. IRMA MAKALINAO

Dr. Irma Makalinao, M.D., M.A. (Peace and Security Studies), FPSCOT, FPPS is a Professor 12 in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. A former Chair (December 2008-September 2010) and Coordinator of the graduate program Master’s of Science in Pharmacology. Dr. Makalinao’s expertise lies in areas of pediatric environmental health, toxicology, pharmacology, advanced hazardous material life support, chemical safety and security. She has pioneered the conceptual framework for biosecurity in the Philippines.

She has served two terms as president of the Philippine Society of Clinical and Occupational Toxicology. She has been instrumental in institutionalizing the first and only Toxicology Fellowship Program in the Philippines in 1996 at the University of the Philippines in Manila From 1997 to 2005 she has served as the first Program Director of the Clinical Toxicology Fellowship based at then National Poison Control and Information Service at the Philippine General Hospital.She has been a member of and consultant to numerous international and national professional societies and organizations, including the Pacific Basin Consortium for Environment and Health Sciences (PBC), the Asia-Pacific Association of Medical Toxicology, the European Association of Poison Control Centers and the International Network on Children’s Health and Environmental Safety (INCHES).

Some of the highlights of Dr. Makalinao’s accomplishments include: leading the Medical Team during the investigation of the Bohol Poisoning Incident; acting as Environmental Team Leader for the Mercury Spill in St Andrews School (with citations and awards given by the School June, 2006 and by the Paranaque City Health December 8, 2006); and acting as on-site Technical Consultant for the Chemical Spill at San Isidro National High School November 25-December 6, 2006 (with award and citation given by the School Board December 11, 2006 and by the DILG BFP December 14, 2006. Dr. Makalinao has been the Science NGO representative to the Intergovernmental Forum on Chemical Safety from 2003-2006 and to the Expanded Bureau of the Strategic Approach to International Chemical's Management (SAICM).

Dr. Makalinao is the recipient of numerous awards, grants and honors including the prestigious national award for Metrobank Outstanding Teacher in 2008, the UP centennial Faculty Grant award, 100 Outstanding Women in the Health Sciences award, the Professional Chair in Children’s Environmental Health, the Most Outstanding Teacher in the Basic Sciences award. . She is also the author of numerous journal articles, book chapters, technical reports and conference papers including the original treatment protocol for the deadly dancing firecracker "watusi" poisoning.
