DR. ANDREA HINWOOD

Edith Cowan University, Western Australia

Associate Professor Andrea Hinwood has a Masters in Applied Chemistry from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Melbourne and a PhD in Environmental Epidemiology from Monash University in Melbourne.

She is currently coordinator of the environmental science program at Edith Cowan University and is active in environmental exposures research. Andrea has worked in the environmental protection area for over twenty years and has a wide experience in investigation, monitoring and management at the local, national and international levels. She has managed the areas of contaminated sites, chemicals management and emergency response. She was Deputy Chair and a Board member of the Western Australian EPA for over 6 years.

Her research interests are in the areas of exposure assessment, hazardous air pollutants, health and environmental impacts of chemicals in the environment.

Current research activities include:

  • Investigating the maternal exposure to persistent chemicals (including metals);
  • Measuring particulate and metals exposures in children from varying sources;
  • Development of exposure metrics and investigating the health effects of air pollutants;
  • Investigating the potential for health impacts from recreational use of acidic mine voids.

Dr. Hinwood was elected to the board of the Consortium in February 2008.
