DR. LUIS CIFUENTES

Dr. Luis Abdón Cifuentes is associate professor of the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department, and head of the Center for Environment of the P. Catholic University of Chile.
His research interests include environmental management, risk analysis and perception, and the social impacts of air pollution. He has several publications on the effects of air pollution in human health, the social benefits of its abatement, and the synergy between climate change mitigation measures and air pollution reduction. He is currently conducting research on the differential impacts of air pollution by socio-economic position, and on public perception of environmental risks in Chile.
Dr. Cifuentes has been a consultant for several organizations, including the National Environmental Commission of Chile, for which he conducted studies assessing the benefits and the effectiveness of several air pollution abatement measures, the US EPA, for which he advised the Integrated Environmental Strategies program, and for the InterAmerican Development Bank. He has participated in both the Third and Fourth Assessment reports of the IPCC.
Dr. Cifuentes received his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from the Catholic University of Chile in 1982 , and a M.Sc And Ph.D in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University in 1995. He has been a professor at the School of Engineering since his graduation.
In 2002 he received the Climate Protection award from the US EPA for his work in cobenefits of climate change mitigation.
Dr. Cifuentes was elected to the Board of the Consortium in September of 2005.
