Water Pollution and Health. The session on water pollution and health, chaired by Dr. Song Gao of the University of Arizona, USA, touched upon important issues on essentially two aspects of water-related research – 1) water pollution and related health effects, and 2) water remediation methods. Presenters represented regions in Asia and the US. In the first aspect, highlights include the discovery of endemic fluorosis in China’s countryside by Zhai Min and a discussion of a common cause of fluorosis in China – indoor coal combustion by Zheng Baoshan. An assessment of bacterial flora in soil and waters after an oil spill in Philippines was presented by Gilda Lio-Po. An investigation of water pollution in Iran was discussed by Reyahi Khoram. In addition, how to include BOD degradation patterns in water quality modeling was discussed in detail by Fan Chihhao. In the second aspect, highlights include several catalytic methods for aerobic oxidation of toluene by Mohammed Sadiq, for destruction of chlorinated organic contaminants in groundwater and soils by Gao Song as well as for degradation of Phenol-containing wastewater by Jia B.. Last but not the least, the fate of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) during wastewater treatment was discussed in detail by Robert Arnold.
