This workshop is designed to introduce environmental health risk assessment and communication to those wanting to have an understanding of what risk assessment is and how it may used in the community setting. This workshop will explore some of the requirements of environmental health risk assessment and the risk communication aspects that must be considered through the approach. We will discuss communication with the interested public and other key stakeholder groups about risk assessment and risk management approaches. This will include illustration of the process and decisions designed to protect human health and the environment through specific case examples and role play. The program will review the key principles underlying risk communication strategies and decision processes related to risk management.
Dr Andrea Hinwood: Dr Hinwood is the coordinator of the environmental science and forensics program at Edith Cowan University where she teaches in the areas of risk assessment, chemicals management and environmental impacts assessment. Dr Hinwood is the Deputy Chair of the risk assessment special interest group for the Clean Air Society of Australia and New Zealand and has many examples of both successful and poor risk assessment and communication.
Dr Jane Heyworth: Dr Heyworth is the Sub Dean of Health Science in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Western Australia, where she teaches public health and epidemiology within the School of Population Health . Dr Heyworth is an environmental epidemiologist with experience in environmental health research, policy and practice. She has been involved in risk assessments including ones related to lead pollution and untreated water supplies.
Mr Paul McCleod: Paul McLeod is a social consultant with Strategen Associates providing risk communication, public participation and other social impact and risk management services. He has worked extensively in the mining, energy, planning, NRM and waste management sectors. He is a regular trainer in risk communication at environmental health seminars.
